Thumbs up for NHVR safety technology blueprint


Developed to support manufacturers and operators to incorporate the latest safety technology into new and existing heavy vehicles, a recently launched blueprint has received widespread industry support, according to the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR).

Launched in July 2020, the Vehicle Safety and Environmental Technology Uptake Plan (Vehicle SETUP) was developed following a survey of manufacturers in 2018. It is designed to meet targets set out in the Federal Government’s National Road Safety Action Plan 2018-2020.

The plan will be delivered over five work packages, including better harmonisation of Australian vehicle standards, better access to the latest vehicle technologies, ensuring appropriate in-service requirements, and industry education about new and emerging technology.

NHVR Chair Duncan Gay said Vehicle SETUP was crucial to give Australia’s heavy vehicle industry certainty when installing new safety technology.

“To have four leading Australian manufacturers plus industry groups attend the launch and support the plan highlights the value Australia’s heavy vehicle industry places in technology that boosts safety and productivity,” he explained.

“I also welcome the support of Daimler’s Daniel Whitehead, who said the plan was ‘a valuable contribution that has the potential to help the Australian transport industry operate more efficiently, cut emissions and ultimately reduce road accident trauma’.”

Australian Trucking Association (ATA) President David Smith asserted NHVR’s Vehicle SETUP would bring out the best in Australia’s heavy vehicle industry, which is already renowned for its innovation.

“Our industry has always prided itself on using innovation and technology to overcome the type of operating conditions that are unique to Australia,” he said.

“The ATA supports any moves to align our standards with global leaders, which will lead to more safety options for operators.”
