Brisbane Isuzu brings apprentice one step closer to a dream career

TAFE Queensland - Brisbane Isuzu

For third generation heavy diesel apprentice, Rik Nand, a passion for the trucking industry runs through his blood – and an opportunity to complete his work experience at Brisbane Isuzu, Eagle Farm has taken him one step closer to achieving his dreams.

Considering his brother, father, uncle and grandfather are all trade qualified mechanics, Rik’s interest in trucks may come as no surprise.

“I worked at my uncle’s workshop growing up and always knew that a career working with cars and trucks was for me. I did some research online and decided that studying the pre-vocational course would be the best way to fine tune my skill sets and enhance my chances of securing an apprenticeship,” Rik says.

The 18-year-old completed his work experience at Brisbane Isuzu, Eagle Farm, through a Certificate II in Automotive Vocational Preparation at TAFE Queensland. He has now been officially welcomed to the team, which has been impressed by Rik’s work ethic and eagerness to learn.

“To be offered an apprenticeship was really exciting, I’ve already learnt so much,” Rik says.

Brisbane Isuzu, Eagle Farm understands the value of apprenticeships. For the past 20 years, it has provided many opportunities for young Queenslanders looking to get their start in the automotive industry.

According to Eagle Farm Isuzu Service Manager, Shaun Cant, trade qualified positions can sometimes be difficult to fill. Though he highlights that it’s extremely important to have young people coming into the industry.

Already, Shaun has been impressed by Rik’s level of enthusiasm and willingness to learn. “I’ve got a passion for this industry, I love it. It’s a great industry with good people and Rik already has that passion,” Shaun says.

“He’s mature beyond his years, has his head screwed on and fits in well with everybody. Rik’s worth his weight in gold already.”

Shaun explains that a key benefit of the Certificate II in Automotive Preparation is the work experience component and the opportunity for exposure to

not only the trade, but also the business.

“Knowing that Rik had completed the pre-vocational course made all the difference when it came to hiring him. The time he spent completing work experience with us really highlighted that he was invested in our industry,” says Shaun.
