Boundary Road in Moama will permanently close to motorists from January 12 to allow construction of the new bridge connecting NSW and Victoria across the Murray River.
Heavy vehicles, however, will continue to access the shopping centre loading dock from the western end of Boundary Road.
A Transport for NSW spokesperson said the closure was the next step in the $323.7 million Echuca-Moama Bridge Project, jointly funded by the Australian, NSW and Victorian governments.
“The permanent closure of Boundary road is necessary to allow work to begin on the new Echuca-Moama Bridge which will ensure safer and more reliable journey for motorists and freight operators,” the spokesperson said.
“With Boundary Street closing, the community will start to see major progress on the second bridge crossing which is supporting 42 jobs in the local area.
“The Echuca-Moama bridge crossing will reduce congestion and improve transport links between the two communities on either side of the Murray.”
The spokesperson added that despite the impact of COVID-19, the project is on track to be completed by mid-2022.
“Work to upgrade the intersections in Moama to connect the Cobb Highway to the new bridge set to be completed by 2021.
“This important project shows our commitment to building quality infrastructure for regional NSW.”
Motorists are advised to drive to the conditions, and follow the directions of signs and traffic control.
Pedestrians and cyclists will still be able to use the shared path while work on Boundary Road is being carried out.
Motorists travelling on Meninya Street, which is currently one-way, will no longer be able to turn into Boundary Road.
Access to Boundary Road will be via Cemetery Road while shoppers can visit Moama Marketplace from Perricoota Road.
