An upgrade to Colinroobie Road will help improve freight movements between Leeton and Narrandera by allowing road train access for the first time.
Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Paul Toole said work to widen, strengthen, seal and install new culverts along a 12.8km section of Colinroobie Road would deliver more efficient freight movement across the region, and improve safety.
“With the amount of freight moved across NSW expected to increase by 12 percent to 286 million tonnes by 2036, we are investing in infrastructure that makes a real difference for generations to come,” Toole said.
“Through our $543 million Fixing Country Roads program, projects like these have unlocked regional job opportunities in construction, while providing upgraded freight routes that save time and deliver smoother, safer and more efficient connections.”
Member for Cootamundra Steph Cooke said Narrandera Shire Council and Leeton Shire Council received $1.18 million through the Fixing Country Roads program with industry and Council contributing $113,000 between them to carry out the 23-month project.
“The movement of freight, particularly of grain and livestock, is so important to the economies of our local communities, so upgrading this road to allow road train access between these two vital towns is a huge win for the region,” Ms Cooke said.
“On top of delivering better journeys for road users, the project generated five jobs during construction, helping to keep our local economy ticking during tough times.”
The Fixing Country Roads program supports regional councils to repair, strengthen, seal or widen roads, build new truck washes, and strengthen or replace worn-out bridges and culverts.
To date, $460.18 million of the $543 million program has been allocated to 327 projects across NSW.
