Free training program for new truckies

A free online training program is now being offered to new truck drivers, aimed at helping them to better understand their obligations under the Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL).

The 4 Points of Contact course was developed by Shift Training and funded by the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator’s (NHVR) Heavy Vehicle Safety Initiative (HVSI), with support from the Federal Government.

Based in Queensland, Shift Training is a family run business and a registered training organisation.

The free short course will train and assess participants in various key areas. It will go over how to complete a vehicle inspection and why it’s important; the cause and effects of fatigue on drivers and the legal requirements to complete a logbook; how to ensure compliance with load restraint and the correct loading of vehicles; how the Chain of Responsibility (CoR) affects you as a driver and how to comply with the HVNL, TMR regulations and WHS; and more.

Shift Training says that those wanting to take the course must first undertake a pre-training assessment of their knowledge for a survey of ‘standards’ in the success of new drivers after gaining their licence.

It’s preferred that those taking part in the program be licenced for 12 months or less.

After completing the course, participants will receive a Certificate of Attendance. They would also be required to participate in an ongoing survey of their driving experience for a further 18 months.

Along with the free online course, Shift Training also offers face-to-face training and practical assessments through paid four-hour or two-day 4 Points of Contact courses.
