New interchange at busy WA intersection

Construction of a new interchange at the busy Leach Highway and Welshpool intersection, which is used by around 50,000 vehicles a day, is now underway.

The works will include a new bridge taking Leach Highway over Welshpool Road, a roundabout under the new bridge, widening the existing Leach Highway over the railway, and a shared path along Leach Highway from Sevenoakes Street to Orrong Road.

The busy spot is listed as the worst intersection in WA for crash frequency.

Main Roads Western Australia said, “The project will support the east-west freight link connecting Fremantle with the Kewdale and Welshpool industrial area. It will also provide access to many industries and businesses, as well as connecting the residential suburbs of East Cannington and Queens Park with Victoria Park via Albany Highway.”

The works are expected to be completed by early 2023.
