New effluent disposal pit opens in SA

A new livestock effluent disposal pit opened this week at the Mount Gambier and District Saleyards in SA, with hopes more sites like this will follow.

The project was a joint initiative of the Australians Livestock and Rural Transporters Association (ALRTA) and the District Council of Grant; funded by the NHVR’s Heavy Vehicle Safety Initiative (HVSI). Preliminary works on the facility began in March.

This is the second site of its kind funded via the HVSI, with the first being one in Horsham, that was opened in July 2020. ALRTA is working on additional sites to be announced in the near future.

“The newly installed pit will provide an opportunity for transporters to dispose of accumulated livestock effluent either at the end of their journey to the saleyards, or on their way to deliver a consignment further afield,” said Saleyards Manager, David Wallis.

“Evidently there are too few locations for transporters to properly dispose of effluent along the road network.”
