Planning is underway to improve safety and efficiency at the Toowoomba Connection and Hursley roads intersection.
Feedback is being sought from the community and road users who regularly use the busy intersection, known to be particularly hazardous having recorded 118 road incidents in the past 20 years.
TMR southern Queensland regional director Bill Lansbury identified Tor Street as a crucial east-west route for freight and urban traffic through the city.
“This planning project is one of many we are working on to reduce the number of fatal and serious crashes on major roads across Queensland,” said Lansbury.
“This intersection has become increasingly busy as development west of Toowoomba surges ahead and commuters use Hursley Road to access the central business district.
“That’s why we’re investigating and asking the community to help identify the best opportunities for safety and efficiency improvements for passenger vehicles, freight, bike riders and pedestrians at this busy intersection.”
The section of Toowoomba Connection Road is locally known as Tor Street. Tor Street is the key east-west arterial route through Toowoomba for local traffic and freight and is approved for use by type 1 road trains.
Planning will assess the current and future transport requirements at the intersection and investigate options to improve safety and efficiency for all road users. The project will deliver a business case for the preferred option in November 2022 and then seek to protect a transport corridor to allow for future upgrades of the intersection.
There is no current timeframe for construction, however The Queensland Government has committed $500,000 through the Transport System Planning Program.
