Effective immediately, Class 1 oversize vehicles up to 5.5m wide are permitted to travel eastbound on the Toowoomba Bypass between Charlton and Helidon, advises the Department of Transport and Main Roads.
Class 1 oversize vehicles exceeding 5.5m up to 7.9m wide and/or 5.4m high are permitted to travel on the approved eastbound detour through Toowoomba, provided a copy of the Approved temporary variation for Class 1 oversize vehicles to access the ToowoombaBypass is used in conjunction with your current permit.
The westbound lanes remain unrestricted for all oversize vehicles.
Approved eastbound route through Toowoomba
Warrego Highway, Troys Road, Carrington Road, Taylor Street, Tor Street, James Street, Toowoomba Connection Road, Warrego Highway.
Loads exceeding 5.5m up to 6.2m wide
- Must carry the temporary variation letter.
- Only permitted to travel through Toowoomba between 9pm-5am during this temporary width restriction period.
Loads exceeding 6.2m up to 7.9m wide
- Must carry the temporary variation letter.
- Must submit a Traffic Management Plan (TMP) and receive TMR approval prior to travel.

- TMP must identify pinch points and wrong side of road travel.
- Only permitted to travel through Toowoomba between 11pm-3am during this temporary width restriction period.
Loads exceeding 7.9m wide
- Must identify an alternate route.
- Submit a permit application, with a completed TMP through the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator.
“We are working to remove the restriction on vehicles under 6.5 metres wide on the Toowoomba Bypass from January 4, conditions permitting, when the statewide Christmas width restriction curfew is lifted,” a TMR spokesperson told Big Rigs.
“We thank heavy vehicle operators for their patience while we carry out these important remediation works.
“We encourage operators to keep an eye on road conditions and restrictions as per their standard operating procedures, in the event conditions change.”
The same heavy vehicles unit also reminded operators that an oversize vehicle is not permitted to travel from 12.01am, December 24, until 11.59pm, January 2, 2022.
An oversize vehicle or combination which requires more than one pilot or escort vehicle is also not permitted to travel from 12.01am, December 19, until 11.59pm, January 2, 2022.
