Heavy traffic build up as M1 closes due to flooding

The M1 Pacific Motorway is closed in both directions from Cudgera Creek to Tweed Heads South due to flooding between Cudgera Creek Road and Minjungbal Drive.

In a note to members this morning, Peak body Road Freight NSW (RFNSW) says there is no detour currently available for heavy vehicles and heavy traffic is building in both directions.

RFNSW, however, understands that Transport for NSW is working with local councils on a solution. Keep up to date at livetraffic.com and also check local council websites for further closures.

RFNSW also reminds operators that a low pressure system located near the Gold Coast (Qld) will track southwards to northeastern New South Wales before deepening off the NSW northeast coast during today.

This system will continue to produce widespread heavy rainfall with areas of locally intense rainfall associated with embedded thunderstorms.

Lismore is bracing itself for the biggest floods since records have been kept.

The flood levee has been breached at Lismore, with the peak still to come.

Several evacuation orders have been issued overnight, including for parts of Lismore, South Murwillumbah and Kyogle.
