Delays for truckies on Heathcote Rd at Engadine, NSW

Truckies are advised of upcoming overnight road closures on Heathcote Road at Engadine, Sydney, to enable work to continue on the new bridge over the Woronora River.

Heathcote Road will be closed weeknights between New Illawarra Road and the Princes Highway from 8pm until 5am between Wednesday, July 6, and Friday, July 15.

These road closures will allow work to progress on the rock excavation at the western approach to the new bridge.

During the closures, a detour that is suitable for freight and B-double trucks up to 26 metres long will be in place via the Princes Highway at Kirrawee and the Bangor Bypass, advised Transport for NSW (TfNSW).

“The detour may add up to 30 minutes to journeys, so motorists are asked to plan ahead and allow additional travel time,” said TfNSW.

“The detour will be clearly signposted but it is recommended alternative routes be used where possible.

“Transport for NSW thanks the community for its patience during this time.”

Heathcote MP Lee Evans announced the new bridge plans late last year, following a community backlash to news that the old bridge would simply have its existing lanes widened.

“This new bridge will be located on the upstream side of the existing bridge and will provide one lane for westbound traffic while the existing bridge will be modified to provide one lane for eastbound traffic,” said Evans.

“The changed design improves safety by providing wider travel lanes, road shoulders and a central concrete median barrier while also ensuring the preservation of the historic original 1940s-era bridge and wildlife corridors.

“This upgrade will improve safety for the 22,000 vehicles that use Heathcote Road every day, including heavy vehicles.”
