Burdekin based Simon Poletti drives a Kenworth T404 and was tending to his load at Townsville Port Access Road when Big Rigs caught up with him.
“I have a big loader to deliver out west,” he said.
A 600km trip was ahead of Poletti, with his destination being near historical Winton.
Aged 55, Poletti has been a truckie on and off for 30 years and also did a stint of fishing for work.
A North Queensland Cowboys supporter in the NRL, Poletti said the Hughenden to Cloncurry stretch of the western Flinders Highway was a challenge to use.
His favourite roadhouse is at Winton in Queensland and when he gets time off Poletti goes recreational fishing.
“I usually go to the Haughton River or Morrisey’s Creek chasing Barramundi when in season,” he said.
The rivers and creeks of what is known as the Bountiful Burdekin abound with many species of edible fish and mud crabs.
The sister towns of Ayr and Home Hill are identified as being major centres at the Burdekin region.
