Heavy rain closes Newell Hwy between Forbes and Back Creek

The Newell Highway between Forbes and Back Creek is closed to all vehicles due to heavy rain in the area causing further flooding, advises the freight branch at Transport for NSW (TfNSW).

The rising water levels has made it too dangerous to escort heavy vehicles through this area, said a notice to industry this afternoon.

“This section is anticipated to be closed for at least two weeks. This is contingent on water levels receding and continued monitoring of weather impacts on the network.”

North-south access for heavy vehicles up to and including B-doubles

Southbound vehicles, including heavy vehicles up to and including 26 metre B-doubles can travel from Parkes to Manildra, Boree, Orange, Millthorpe, Blayney, Cowra, Young, Wallendbeen, Temora and rejoin the Newell Highway just north of Ardlethan. The same diversion will apply for northbound vehicles.

Alernate route for vehicles over 26 metres

Road trains over 26 metres or over 3.5 metres wide are advised to use the Mitchell Highway from Dubbo to Nyngan, Barrier Highway to Broken Hill, Silver City Highway to Mildura and the Sturt Highway. The same diversion will apply for northbound vehicles.

“The situation is very dynamic, and we will continue to keep you updated as the situation develops,” adds TfNSW.
