The Newell Highway between Forbes and West Wyalong has reopened.

The closure due to flooding and pavement damage was in place for 49 days.

Approximately 30km of the highway between Mid-Western Highway at Back Creek and Wennings Road, south of Forbes, will remain under traffic control with a reduced speed limit of between 40-60km/h to ensure the safety of all motorists.

Work will continue while the road is open and traffic control will also be in place at various locations.

NSW Regional Transport and Roads Minister Sam Farraway said he was pleased to see the flood-prone section of the Newell open just in time for Christmas, particularly for the freight industry.

“Making sure they can move the goods and service, and getting everything from paddock to plate using the Newell Highway,” said the Nationals MP in a video message on his Facebook page.

“Once upon a time when flood waters would close this highway it would be closed for six months.”
