VIDEO: Bridge girders arrive for Bruce Highway project

The first of 39 new bridge girders for the Edmonton to Gordonvale project have arrived on site, ready to be put into place.

Weighing 30 tonne each, the bridge girders are the longest and heaviest pieces of the puzzle for the project. Crews have now started putting the bridge girders in place for the Menmuny Overpass.

The project is Stage 3 of the Cairns Bruce Highway Upgrade Master Plan released in 2010 – a 10.5km upgrade and duplication of the Bruce Highway between Edmonton and Gordonvale.

The aim of the project is to improve safety along the stretch, which is the busiest two-lane section of the Bruce Highway between Brisbane and Cairns. The works will bring this section up to four lanes.

This project is being jointly funded by the Australian Government and the Queensland Government.
