Mackay truck convoy fundraiser sets new record

Bring on the 15th anniversary event in 2024.

That was the call from Johanna Wood, co-ordinator of Mackay’s annual Konvoy 4 Kids event that raises money and awareness for Variey Queensland – the Children’s Charity after the massive turnout for the latest convoy at the weekend.

A record 194 vehicles turned up for this year’s event on Sunday August 13 from the Sarina to Mackay showgrounds – up from 136 in 2022 – with an estimated $20,000 raised for the local charity.

“The support of our sponsors is a huge, huge help to run the event,” Wood said.

“The other highlight for me is the community support, the people coming along to the Family Fun Day and all the entrants. We would have never imagined that we would have got to this sort of number for our small community event.

“We’re just proud that people are happy to support such a worthy cause.”

The event started in 2009 as part of the fundraising efforts by Wood’s parents Chubb and Madonna Stevens for the annual Queensland Variety Bash, which this year is travelling from Toowoomba to Cairns.

“Next year’s convoy event is going to be a really exciting year and hopefully we can crack that 200 mark,” said Wood, who has a tentative date of August 18 for the 2024 event.
