Work has begun on a $12.57 million safety upgrade to a five-kilometre section of the Newell Highway between Moree and Boggabilla.
The funding will be used for upgrades to the North Croppa Creek section of the Newell Highway, about 71 kilometres north of Moree.
Due to be completed in early 2025, weather permitting, the final project will include:
- a new heavy-duty road pavement
- a one-metre wide centre line
- upgrades to three intersections.
Following completion of early preparation work, main road construction and earthworks started on Monday January 22.
Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Jenny Aitchison says the road safety improvements will help separate oncoming lanes of traffic and prevent serious head-on crashes.
“In addition to this, we’re also upgrading three intersections at Oaklea, Karuah and Limebon Roads, and these upgrades will provide safer access to the highway,” she said.
Upgrade works will take place from 7am to 6.30pm on weekdays with changed traffic conditions in place including local intersection and lane closures and a reduced 40 km/h speed limit in some areas.
