Upcoming overnight freeway closures for Victoria

To facilitate West Gate Freeway widening works – to bring it up from eight to 12 lanes – there will be a series of overnight freeway closures in coming weeks.

This will include both road and ramp closures to the West Gate Freeway, Princes Freeway and M80 Ring Road on specific dates throughout April and May.

According to Victoria’s Big Build, the overnight closures are required in order to safely install the remaining overhead gantries, which will help ensure the freeway operates safely and smoothly.

Routes affected by closures are:

  • Princes Freeway inbound carriageway from Kororoit Creek to the M80 interchange
  • Princes Freeway inbound ramps to Geelong Road and the West Gate Freeway
  • West Gate Freeway in both directions between the West Gate Bridge and the M80 interchange (closures of varying limits will apply. Different sections of the freeway will close depending on where the gantry will be installed)
  • M80 Ring Road (Altona-bound) inbound from Boundary Road to the M80 interchange.

Throughout the summer, the West Gate Tunnel Project saw 36,000 tonnes of asphalt laid along the West Gate Freeway between the M80 interchange and Millers Road. More than 35 massive steel overhead gantries were also installed.
