Calls to review safety at an intersection of the New England Highway north of Tenterfield, NSW, have resulted in the reduction of speed limits in the area.
The 80km/h speed limit on the New England Highway will be extended a further 3.2km to the north, to include both the Old Ballandean Road and Bruxner Way intersections, while the existing 100km/h speed limit on Old Ballandean Road will be reduced to 80km/h.
The changes follow the tragic death of Jackson Clarke, 17, who was driving across the highway when he was hit by a truck at the notorious intersection in February this year.
His family believed a reduction in the 100km/h speed limit could have resulted in a different outcome.
“Electronic message signs will be installed on the New England Highway to advise motorists of the new speed limit and will remain in place for a number of weeks after the speed zone change occurs,” a Transport for NSW spokesperson said.
“The existing give way signs at both intersections will be replaced with stop signs, with all intersection warning signage replaced and all linemarking refreshed to ensure visibility for all road users.”
The spokesperson said the existing 80km/h speed limit on Bruxner Way remains appropriate and will be retained.
Transport for NSW carried out the review in consultation with Tenterfield Shire Council and NSW Police, and in accordance with the NSW Speed Zoning Standard.
