A military exercise went horribly wrong when the driver of an army truck misjudged the height of their vehicle while stopping for fuel.
The army truck crashed into the awning at the Ampol service station in Sarina, just south of Mackay, causing significant damage to the building structure and to petrol pumps.
According to reports, the army truck was travelling from Brisbane to Townsville for a military exercise, when it stopped to fuel up along the Bruce Highway at around 5.15pm last night.
Police and Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) were called to the scene, with no injuries reported.
A QFES spokesperson told ABC News that the service station staff had turned power to the fuel line off by the time emergency crews arrived and there was no risk of fuel leaks.
An Ampol spokesperson told Big Rigs that while the site trades as Ampol, it is not owned by the company.
“Engineers are due to attend the Ampol Sarina Service Centre later today to determine the extent of damage. A report will be provided to the owner thereafter which will determine the site’s operational options.”
According to the Department of Defence, they are working with Queensland emergency services, local trades and authorities to secure the area and remove the vehicle from the site.
“Defence thanks the public for their understanding and remains committed to ensuring the safety of all Australian Defence Force personnel during training activities,” a spokesperson said.
It’s only minor damage to the roof of the drive way that shouldn’t cost too much .
It’s what was on the drivers mind that he forgot how high his load is and that has been happening quite a bit lately so all trucks should be made to be equipped a fold up height measure pole to know the height of their loads , especially for rail bridges in the cities
