Truckies gear up for bumper Alexandra Truck Show

Truckies in regional Victoria are in for a treat this weekend, as the picturesque town of Alexandra gears up for its 27th annual truck show.

Some 120 trucks are already registered for the popular event, which also welcomes utes and rods – and many more sign-ups are expected in the coming days.

“We had the same number of trucks signed up at this stage last year, and we ended up having more than 350 on the day,” said organiser Andrew Embling.

“There’s been a huge volume of enquiries so we’re expecting a big crowd!”

The festivities will take place over two days, with a barbecue, truck run and memorial ceremony for truck drivers on Saturday June 8.

Truckies will assemble at Yarck at 11am and enjoy some BBQ food before rolling out in their rigs at midday and heading to Alexandra.

They will arrive in time for the service at the Victorian Truck Driver’s Memorial in the Rotary Memorial Park at 2pm, where 15 names of truck drivers who have passed away will be added to the wall.

Sunday June 9 is the main event, with exhibitors and drivers pulling up from 4.30am, ready to be guided into place.

Trucks, utes and rods of all shapes and sizes will then line the streets, ready to be enjoyed by the expected 15,000 visitors.

The best-presented vehicles are in with a chance of winning some coveted silverware, with 42 trophies ready to be handed out in the 4pm prize-giving ceremony.

Entry is free for the public, who can enjoy live music from 10am, with Brooke Taylor and the Poison Spitting Gin Queens taking to the main stage as well as Golden Guitar winner Paul Costa.

An auction will also take place at 2pm, with a raffle at 3.30pm. Funds raised will be given to local charities, with more than $33,000 allocated last year.

Other drawcards include a wood chop competition and children’s rides.

Embling said he’s happy with how the Alexandra Truck Ute & Rod Show has grown over the years.

“I’m one of the original committee members and when I started, I had dark hair – now I’ve got white hair,” he laughed.

“That’s how long we’ve been running this thing for.

“We started in a little shopping precinct and then it gradually grew to another block and now it takes up nearly two and a half kilometres of distance in Alexandra.”
