The Wingecarribee Shire Council has received $10.8 million from the NSW Government to conduct further studies, planning work and finalise a business case for a future Moss Vale Bypass.
The council was due to receive $14.3 million to progress the project from the former NSW Government, however only received $3.5 million of that amount.
With the further funding now released, Wingecarribee Shire Council’s director of service and project delivery, Karin Targa, said: “We are encouraged by this additional funding. This represents the first dedicated construction funding secured for the project, demonstrating the current NSW State Government’s strong support for the Bypass.”
According to the council, the design phase is past the halfway point, so this funding will allow them to finalise the design and commence preliminary construction works.
“Upon completion of the design and confirmation of a favourable cost-benefit ratio, together with a robust business case, the funding will support early-stage construction works,” the council said.
The Moss Vale Bypass will provide an alternative route across the Main Southern Railway Line, eliminating height restrictions and flooding concerns. It is also expected to reduce congestion on Argyle Street during peak periods and support the future growth of Moss Vale.
“By diverting heavy traffic, we can create a safer and more liveable town centre, while still supporting the growth of key developments like Ashbourne Estate and the Southern Highlands Innovation Park,” added Targa.
Following the completion of the design and finalisation of costs, the council will collaborate with the NSW Government and other stakeholders to secure the remaining funding required for the project’s estimated $150 million construction cost.
The council’s final business case is expected to be completed by August 2025.
