NSW Police have revealed the results of a 22-hour safety blitz within the precinct of the Sydney Markets in the city’s inner-west.
The Traffic and Highway Patrol Command joined up with the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) and conducted Operation Big Wheels from 6pm on July 21 to 4pm the next day.
Police said the objective of the operation was to ensure heavy vehicle compliance in and around the markets, as well as to target and remove impaired heavy vehicle drivers from our roads.
During the operation 285 heavy vehicles were stopped and inspected.
All 285 drivers were breath and drug tested with five drivers allegedly returning a positive roadside drug test and one driver returning a low-range prescribed concentration of alcohol.
A total of 99 infringement notices were issued for various alleged licence, traffic and load restraints offences and 109 defect notices were issued by NHVR.
Further operations are planned to ensure ongoing compliance, police said.
