Multi-vehicle crash adds to chaos on Bruce Highway

Motorists have been advised to expect delays following a multi-vehicle crash at Althaus Creek Bridge on the Bruce Highway at Bluewater.

Lanes are reduced in both directions as emergency services attend the scene.

It’s understood that at least one person has been badly injured in the incident.

The collision follows a series of crashes on the notorious highway over the past few days, including a fatal incident at Bororen, south of Gladstone, on Friday.

The driver of a ute died in a head-on collision with a B-double carrying 42.5 tonnes of ammonium nitrate, a chemical commonly used in fertilisers.

The crash caused the truck to explode, leaving a crater in the highway and producing a damage radius of 500 metres.

The 47-year-old truck driver from New South Wales was airlifted to hospital in a serious condition.

The highway is currently closed at Bororen, with detours in place.

TMR Queensland is working toward re-opening a minimum single lane on the Bruce Highway under traffic control by 11:55pm Tuesday 3 September.

A man also died over the weekend after being struck by a ute on the Burnett Highway at Malmoe, 400 kilometres north-west of Brisbane.

The road is being used as a heavy vehicle detour while the Bruce Highway is closed.

Last week, a 29-year-old truck driver tragically died in hospital after the truck he was driving was involved in a multi-vehicle traffic crash at Gindoran on the Bruce Highway.

At approximately 1.50am on August 27, a truck crashed near Granite Creek Forestry Road.

A heavy vehicle travelling in the opposite direction slowed to assist with that crash and was struck from behind by a number of trucks.

The driver of the first truck that collided with the assisting heavy vehicle from behind sustained critical injuries.
