Bruce Highway on schedule to reopen after ‘significant progress’

Transport and Main Roads Queensland has said “significant progress” has been made on the clean-up of the Bruce Highway following a major incident last Friday.

Serious damage was caused to the highway after a fatal head-on collision between a B-double tanker carrying ammonium nitrate and a ute.

The impact caused the tanker to explode, producing a large crater in the road and a damage radius of 500 metres.

The Bruce Highway has been closed at Bororen, south of Gladstone, since the incident, with TMR still on schedule to reopen one lane at 11.55pm tonight.

A spokesperson told Big Rigs: “Following a significant crash and subsequent explosion on the Bruce Highway north of Bororen on Friday, the highway remains closed.

“Work commenced on site immediately after TMR was handed possession of the crash site at 9am Sunday 1 September, with clean-up activities and various inspections (pavement, geotechnical, environment, cultural heritage) being undertaken in parallel.

“Significant progress is being made on site with the highway expected to open to single lane traffic by 11:55pm Tuesday 3 September 2024.”

Road closures are still in place at Wadeleigh Street in Bororen township (northbound) and just south of the Turkey Beach Road intersection (southbound).
