Bruce Highway reopens to trucks ahead of schedule

The Bruce Highway at Bororen is now open again after being closed since a truck exploded after a head-on with a ute on Friday causing unprecedented delays.

The impact caused the tanker to explode, producing a large crater in the road and a damage radius of 500 metres.

The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) told Big Rigs earlier today that it had expected one lane to reopen at 11.55pm tonight, but work on the site has progressed faster than expected.

In an alert posted on qldtraffic.qld.gov.au this evening, TMR said the highway is now open to two lanes of traffic with a speed reduction to 60km/h and traffic management in place.

Road users are not permitted to stop through the roadwork zone.

“General freight and PBS heavy vehicles can operate through this section of the Bruce Highway at pre-existing mass limits,” TMR said.

“Class 1 Oversize Overmass heavy vehicle operators are not currently permitted on this section of road. Motorists are reminded to observe all warning signs, speed restrictions and traffic control directions in place.

“Detour signage will be progressively removed after the opening of the Bruce Highway. Permanent works are expected to be completed by early October 2024.”
