Truck grounded and major defect issued for badly damaged tyre

The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) is reminding drivers of the importance of pre-start checks, after pulling up this truck and seeing the condition of its tyres, among other issues.

The truck was recently inspected by the regulator’s safety and compliance officers.

The left-hand side tyre on the rear axle was found to be devoid of legal tread and the inner tyre was destroyed, effecting the vehicle’s braking ability.

“Something that could have been picked up during a simple pre-start check,” said the NHVR.

“The team also found a 52 per cent brake imbalance on the second axle, further impacting the vehicle’s braking ability, and damaged headlight lenses on both sides, significantly reducing vision at night-time – both posing serious safety risks.”

The NHVR says pre-start checks are important for the safety of both the driver and other road users too.

Following the inspection, the truck was grounded until the tyre was replaced, before the vehicle was allowed to be driven to their workshop for further repairs to be carried out.

The company that owns the truck was also issued a major defect notice.

“Remember, it’s never worth the risk,” added the NHVR. “If you feel pressured to drive a defective vehicle, you can make a report to the Heavy Vehicle Confidential Reporting Line on 1800 931 785.”
