An additional $45 million has been announced to fund 23 council-nominated road safety projects across regional areas in NSW.
Funded by the NSW Government, the extra spend comes from an additional $80 million investment into the Towards Zero Safer roads program, following an additional $200 million recently announced for regional projects on state roads, managed by Transport for NSW.
To be provided over three years, this funding will allow for the delivery of the 23 road safety projects and to progress the implementation of three 40 km/h High Pedestrian Activity Areas on roads maintained by local councils in regional NSW.
The Towards Zero Safer Roads Program is a road safety infrastructure upgrade and speed management program aimed at delivering sustainable and long-term reductions in road trauma across the NSW road network by addressing high risk locations.
“Even though regional NSW only makes up a third of the NSW population, sadly two thirds of deaths on our roads happen on country roads,” said Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Jenny Aitchison.
“I am pleased to say 23 regional council-nominated projects have secured funding under this round of funding which will result in much needed infrastructure for regional NSW.”
Examples of the improvements this round of the program will provide include the installation of pedestrian crossings, roundabouts, shoulder upgrades and road widening to help reduce the risk of crashes.
Among the biggest projects being funded as part of the program are:
- $4.2 million for safety improvements including road realignment and installation of roadside safety barrier on Rockvale Road at Aberfoyle
- $4.6 million for safety improvements including shoulder widening, installation of roadside safety barrier, clearzone and delineation improvements on Bylong Valley Way at Kerrabee
- $3.3 million for safety improvements including shoulder widening and delineation improvements on Whiley Road at Spring Hill
- $4.83 million for safety improvements including shoulder widening, installation of roadside safety barrier, clearzone and delineation improvements on Marthaguy Road at Tenandra
- $4.47 million for safety improvements including shoulder widening, clearzone and delineation improvements on Carinda Road at Mount Foster
They need to spend that money on getting the idiot truck drivers of the road that don’t even know how to control a loaded truck and never will.
I predicted that there would be a fatality at cangai years ago I heard the collision that night.
You all can take this any way you like but as far as I’m concerned there are a lot of drivers out there that shouldn’t be on the road.
The big trucking companies have to much political clout there putting a lot of drivers at risk it’s about time there was change I’ve spoken to a lot of drivers and they all agree with me
