Well known truckie Paul “Sludge” Andrews has shared livestream footage from the Camp Quality Convoy for Kids in Perth over the weekend, where he was finally back behind the wheel of his beloved truck, The Phantom.
It’s been a long road to recovery for Sludge, following a horrific motorcycle accident early last year that left him with significant head injuries. As a result, Sludge was unable to drive – and uncertain of how long it would be before he could drive his truck again.
But thankfully, things are now looking up.
Sludge shared video of the drive home from the event, where he’s seen driving his 2008 Peterbilt 379 called ‘The Phantom’ alongside his wife Wendy.
“It’s nice to be behind the wheel again,” he said. “It’s a good start.
“We’ve had a couple of days in the truck already and it’s nice but I’ve still got a little way to go yet.
“It’s nice to have her [The Phantom] out and it’s nice to get back to the people who have supported us, to be able to go to Camp Quality for the kids.”
Sludge also thanked everyone who has supported him through the difficult times over the past 18 months, while he was forced to take a step back due to his health.
Though he also revealed that he won’t be going back to full time truck driving just yet.
“I’ve still got a long way. I’ve still got to get over some medicals and stuff. It’s probably five or six months before I get through them.
“But baby steps. I just want to do a little bit of local work around town if friends have got stuff they want done, I’ll go out and do it and give the old girl run.”
Wendy added, “It’s really cool seeing you behind the wheel, on the freeway, heading homebound.”
