Tragic start to month for trucking industry on Australia’s roads

It’s been a tragic start to November for the trucking industry with multiple fatalities recorded since November 1.

The spate of incidents began on Friday, November 1, in Wandi, a suburb of Perth, when an Isuzu truck driving south on the Kwinana Freeway rolled about 500m south of Rowley Road at 8.50am.

Tragically, the 39-year-old male driver died at the scene.

The following day another fatal rollover occurred on the NSW Central Coast.

Emergency services were called to Casey Drive, Watanobbi, following reports of a truck crash at about 10am.

The driver – a man aged in his 60s – died at the scene.

That same day, a man died following a fatal two-vehicle traffic crash in Mount Carbine, Queensland.

Around 9.20am, a truck and vehicle were travelling in opposite directions on the Mulligan Highway when they crashed.

The driver and sole occupant of the Prime Mover, a 39-year-old White Rock man, was airlifted to Cairns Hospital for observation.

A man in his 20s, the driver and sole occupant of the vehicle, died at the scene.

The following morning, November 3, two people died in a truck crash north of Moree.

Emergency services were called to the Newell Highway, about 75km north of Moree, following reports of a crash at about 3.30am.

Officers attached to New England Police District attended and found a B-double truck had rolled over and caught alight.

The fire was extinguished by NSW Fire and Rescue and Rural Fire Service crews.

The truck driver – a man aged in his 50s – and his passenger – a woman aged in her 60s – died at the scene.

NSW Police have commenced inquiries into the circumstances surrounding both crashes.

Later that same morning, a truck driver in Tasmania died following a two vehicle crash on the Bass Highway near Elizabeth Town in the state’s north.

Acting Inspector Aleena Crack said police and emergency services were called to the scene about 7.20am, following reports of a crash between two trucks at the intersection of the Bass Highway and Bengeo Road.

Emergency services quickly arrived on the scene where sadly, a male driver of one of the trucks was confirmed deceased.

The male driver of the other vehicle was transported to the Launceston General Hospital with non life threatening injuries.

“The circumstances leading up to the crash are being investigated by police and a report will be prepared for the Coroner,” Acting Inspector Crack said.

“Anyone with information or relevant dash cam footage, is asked to contact police on 131 444.”

“Our thoughts are with everyone involved.”
