Secure couplings every time with JOST Loc-Light

When you’re heading out in the truck, no matter how long or short your journey may be, you’re going to need to know that your trailer is securely attached.

JOST’s innovative Loc-Light Fifth Wheel Light, with its dual-sensor monitoring setup and LED throat illumination, can give you that peace of mind.

It ensures a reliable coupling every time, reducing the risk of dangerous and expensive errors and making pre-trip inspections more efficient.

How it works

The fifth wheel light dual-sensor system, integrated with the Go/No-Go indicator light near the handle, ensures a secure coupling.

When the handle and kingpin are properly locked, the fifth wheel light turns green, signalling a “Go light.” If the handle or kingpin is not correctly locked, the fifth wheel light flashes red, indicating a “No-Go light” with an audible buzzer.

Additionally, the LED throat illumination automatically activates when the system is engaged. This light shines directly into the wheel’s throat, providing a clear view of the lockbar for pre-trip inspections.

This feature simplifies the inspection process, saving time and improving accuracy. With better visibility, drivers can quickly identify any issues and ensure a secure connection before hitting the road.

The Loc-Light in action

At the Australian Trucking Association’s Technology and Maintenance Conference in Melbourne recently, attendees got the chance to learn more about the benefits of the Loc-Light product.

JOST Australia’s national training manager Bob Martin and area sales manager John Dreves were on hand to provide a live demonstration of the Loc-Light in action and answer questions from interested customers.

“Our sensor technology has a display, that sits up on the dash of the prime mover,” Martin explained.

“With some of the later European prime movers, this information actually comes up in the instrument cluster, so we’re able to utilise that.

“What we did find, though, with the likes of A-trailers or converter dollies, that it was difficult to get that information from a dolly fifth wheel all the way through one or two trailers up into the prime mover cab.

“So we came up with the Loc-Light system, which operates remotely down at the fifth wheel itself.”

Martin explained that the Loc-Light product can help prevent a “false coupling” situation.

“What we’re seeing often when we investigate dropped trailers is that the drivers have only half coupled,” he said.

“They’ve backed on, they’ve heard the thing go ‘clunk’, they’ve stopped, but they haven’t backed all the way onto the pin.

“What that means is, the jaw hasn’t fully closed, and the lock bar hasn’t gone across behind the jaw.

“The way that JOST fifth wheels operate is they’ve got a once-piece jaw that swings around the pin.

“Once it’s swung all the way closed, our lock bar, attached to the lever and handle, comes across from one side of the casting and locks into the other side of the casting to form a positive lock.”
