The 20th anniversary of the i98FM Illawarra Convoy is off to the best possible start with today’s Lead Truck Auction and yesterday’s Lead Bike Auction shattering expectations of the organisers.
Both auctions raised a staggering $1.6 million before a single engine revs for this Sunday’s huge event.
This incredible sum brings the total amount raised by Convoy over the past 20 years to a remarkable $26,880,404.
For the first time, the team from Tiny Tins and Wollongong Crane Trucks will proudly lead the trucks in the Convoy with their phenomenal $300,020 donation.
This comes after exceptional fundraising efforts from the team throughout the year, including two Battle of the Businesses boxing events as well as a kid’s Halloween disco.
Last year’s Lead Truck bidder, Menai Haulage donated a huge $222,281 and MJ Rowles also contributed $110,000 to today’s total amount raised.
For the fourth consecutive year, Coles Illawarra will lead the motorbikes having donated an incredible winning bid of $220,220.
However, in the ultimate act of generosity, Peter Anderson regional manager for Coles, offered the Lead Bike position to Kris from second-placed Throttle Jockies, who has been facing his own tough cancer battle.
This Sunday’s Convoy will depart under police escort at 8.15am from GM3 Appin (formerly West Cliff Colliery) on Appin Road.
It will then travel down Mt Ousley, through Warrawong, past Stockland Shellharbour and finish at the free Family Fun Day, located at Shellharbour Airport.
Registered motorbikes arrive at 9.15am, with trucks to follow around 10am.
The day is packed with entertainment, including performances by Diesel and Andrew Swift as well as local bands, along with Kye’s FMX Jam, plus rides, food, market stalls and a Cars for Convoy display. i98FM (98.1) will be broadcasting live from 6am.
All funds raised directly support the Illawarra Community Foundation, helping families battling life- threatening and life-limiting illnesses.
To date, they’ve assisted over 720 families in the Illawarra and South Coast as well as contributed over $4.3 million to the Wollongong Hospital Children’s Ward redevelopment, along with contributions to other charities.
