Illawarra Convoy raises a whopping $2.5 million

After a massive event over the weekend, the final figures are now in – with the Illawarra Convoy raising $2,502,020 for the Illawarra Community Foundation.

It was the 20th anniversary of the event, with over 700 trucks taking part.

Organisers had previously revealed that over $1.6 million was raised before the event even began.

Among the massive contributions to the final tally were $300,020 from Tiny Tins and Wollongong Crane Trucks, which secured their Lead Truck position, and $220,220 from Coles for Lead Bike.

Since the event began in 2005, it’s raised a total of $27,693,636.

“The unwavering generosity of the Illawarra community continues to amaze me,” said Bill White, i98FM Illawarra convoy manager. “Especially in these tough economic times, it’s incredibly humbling to see local businesses and families come together to support those in need.

“We’re so proud of how this event has grown in the past 20 years and it’s thanks to the incredible staff, volunteers, local businesses and especially the amazing Illawarra Community that sees this event grow each year.”

Sunday’s historic event saw 672 motorbikes and 715 trucks travel from GM3 Appin down Mount Ousley and conclude at the free Family Fun Day at Shellharbour Airport.

Thousands of people lined the streets of Illawarra with this year’s event potentially having the highest attendance ever.

The free Family Fun Day saw Diesel and Andrew Swift perform on the main stage as well as local performers Kane Calcite and Straya along with the daring stunts of Kye’s FMX Jam entertaining the crowds.

Three kids and family buses also allowed recipients of the Illawarra Community Foundation to travel in the Convoy, many of whom are currently undergoing treatment.

“Funds raised through Convoy stay here in the Illawarra, Shoalhaven and Southern Highlands to help individuals and families battling life-threatening and life-limiting illnesses,” said i98’s Marty Haynes, who founded the convoy, which has seen him awarded an Order of Australia Medal.

“After 20 years, it’s truly heartwarming to see the community unite to ease the burden on those facing immense challenges. Currently, we’re providing funding to an average of 14 families per month as well as assisting other local charities and contributing to the purchase of essential medical equipment and upgrades for our hospitals.

“These funds will ensure that we can continue helping those members of our community who need extra support when times are tough.”
