$4.2 million on the table for road safety projects

Submissions for round 10 of the Heavy Vehicle Safety Initiative (HVSI) are now open, with successful projects to share in $4.2 million.

The Australian Government and the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) announced the funding this week, which will be dedicated to industry-led road safety projects.

The funding is aimed at supporting projects that increase compliance and deliver safety benefits for the transport and logistics sector.

Project submissions must directly address at least one of the three themes – safer drivers, safer vehicles or safer road use.

Businesses or associations involved in the heavy vehicle industry looking to address a safety gap or issue are encouraged to apply for the grants program.

The Australian Government has so far invested over $41 million across 169 HVSI projects under the first nine rounds of the program.

Federal Assistant Minister for Regional Development, Anthony Chisholm, said: “Previous rounds of the HVSI have funded crucial projects such as mental health training, awareness campaigns on how to drive safely around heavy vehicles, online training programs influencing driver behaviour and projects that are removing barriers for young people entering the trucking sector.

“Australia’s road toll is far too high, with 2024 on track to be one of the deadliest years on our roads, so it’s critical we continue to support safety projects that aim to make a real difference on our roads and are led by industry, for industry.

“Not only are HVSI projects helping reduce our road toll, but they’re providing the tools and resources needed to support a more productive and efficient freight network.”

NHVR chief executive officer Sal Petroccitto OAM added: “I am pleased the NHVR can continue to support innovative safety projects through the HVSI, that are helping to reduce road trauma and ultimately, save lives.

“This is an opportunity for all groups and individuals involved in the heavy vehicle industry or across the wider supply chain that have a project, program, or campaign that will increase compliance and promote safety on our roads, to apply for this game-changing grants program.

“I am looking forward to seeing what round 10 brings, so we can continue to deliver improved safety outcomes not only for the heavy vehicle industry, but for all road users.”

Submissions for round 10 of the HVSI will close at 5pm AEST on February 17, 2025.
