The team behind Outback Truckers is on the hunt for rookie truck drivers interested in being part of a new television series, which would see up and coming drivers mentored by “outback trucking legends”.
The new series Rookie Truckers will follow lucky rookie truck drivers travelling the length and breadth of the country, guided by highly experienced drivers who are keen to impart their knowledge and wisdom to the next generation.
As the show will focus on road train work, those wanting to apply to take part must hold their MC licence.
Senior development producer at Prospero Productions, Mary Finnigan, revealed the concept for Rookie Truckers came about when the team was filming the latest series of Outback Truckers.
“They kept hearing about the driver shortage and saw the statistic that by 2026, the majority of Aussie truckies would be aged 65 and over,” she said.
“We thought it would be a wonderful idea to see the next generation learn the ropes and earn their stripes in the hopes of becoming truly great truckies. We are still in the early stages of research and development but are looking to follow the journeys of eight rookie truck drivers.”
While Prospero hasn’t yet revealed which trucking legends will serve as mentors, more will be revealed in coming months. The team is also hoping to start filming for the series early in the new year.
Along with holding their MC licence, Prospero is looking for drivers who are truly passionate about trucking and who want to be mentored by highly experienced truckies.
