1200km detour is the ‘only alternative route into FNQ’

As heavy rain continues to lash Far North Queensland, the only available alternative route for heavy vehicle operators will add an additional 1200-kilometres to the journey.

The Queensland Trucking Association (QTA) shared the advice it had received from Transport and Main Roads Queensland (TMR) just after 11pm last night (Feb 3).

This option is for freight vehicles that can operate on the alternative route without the need for a permit issued by the NHVR.

Operators who have current permits to operate their heavy vehicles on the Bruce Highway between Mackay and Innisfail must apply to the NHVR requesting to have these permits amended to reflect the alternative route.

Operators that cannot operate on the alternative route without the need for a permit must apply for one via the NHVR.

QTA CEO Gary Mahon says the detour equates to almost the distance between Brisbane and Townsville, and that it will add significant costs to moving freight into the region.

“Operators should give serious consideration to using this route and preparing drivers accordingly with the provision of plentiful resources, food, water and paper maps. With the weather forecasting the rain to move west, there is a risk that drivers will be held up on this route,” Mahon explained.

He added that freight clients should expect significant cost increases for freight deliveries from operators using this route.

“I have been in touch with many of our members who have trucks parked up across the region who are concerned for driver welfare and also fuel supplies for fridge units. I am aware this is an extremely stressful time for operators,” he continued.
