Coolgardie rest area wins praise from truckies

Interstate drivers who venture into WA hauling material have praised a rest area at the town of Coolgardie.

Coolgardie is a small town 560km east of Perth and as a former booming mining town has lots of historical sights.

One truckie who stops there regularly said it was on the edge of town and had toilets and showers.

“It is also near the roadhouse and a few minutes’ walk to the local IGA supermarket,” he said.

He added that numerous trucks stop there and as a bonus there is a hook-up area.

“I never see many caravans there,” he said.

There are rubbish bins, potable water and it boasts good Telstra, Optus and TV reception.

The Shire of Coolgardie was one of 71 recipients of a grant through the Driver Reviver program, which enabled them to upgrade the rest area just off Great Eastern Highway on Lady Loch Road.

Toilet and shower facilities were installed, as well as a gazebo and barbecue area.

Shire president Malcolm Cullen said providing a rest area with improved amenities such as a shower and barbecue was vital for road safety in the region.

“We are grateful to the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communications for providing the grant,” he said at the time.

The new rest stop complements the Lady Loch Road Train Assembly Area constructed in 2019-20.
