Operators must have their say on the future of freight

You don’t have to spend long in this industry to understand one thing: freight moves because people make it move.

Owner-drivers, family-run fleets, and dispatchers – they’re the backbone of Australia’s supply chain. They keep freight flowing through fire, floods, fuel price shocks and more. But too often, when the conversation turns to the “future of freight,” the voices of these operators are absent.

At Ofload, we’ve never claimed to have all the answers. We’re not behind the wheel. We haven’t pulled an all-nighter across the Nullarbor or waited five hours at a loading dock.

But we have listened – to thousands of carriers across the country, from single-truck businesses to growing fleets. And one message continues to come through: the system still isn’t working as well as it should for the people doing the work.

Ofload started with a clear goal – to make freight booking faster, fairer, and more efficient. But over time, our focus has grown to include something bigger: reducing the friction points that slow down operators and helping smaller businesses access the same tools and opportunities as the majors.

Because for many carriers, the challenges go far beyond simply finding freight. The real pressure lies in the in-between: chasing overdue payments, covering rising diesel costs, dealing with endless admin, or trying to plan routes without access to clear, timely data. For small operators, it often means doing everything themselves, all while driving the truck too.

Backing carriers where it matters most

FastPay, for example, was created because waiting 30 or 60 days to get paid just doesn’t work for most operators. It lets carriers access their earnings in under 24 hours, not only for Ofload loads, but even for jobs they’ve booked independently. It’s not flashy. But it solves a problem.

We’ve also worked with partners to pass on fuel savings that make a genuine difference. Access to wholesale fuel pricing isn’t just a short-term perk.

Over time, it can drive meaningful savings. And for operators looking to grow, we’ve introduced finance options designed to move at the pace of a freight business – with low-doc approvals, flexible short-term repayment plans, and offers that don’t rely on ticking corporate-sized boxes.

Built from real conversations

These solutions aren’t designed in a boardroom. They come from conversations – the kind you have in the yard, at the fuel stop, or after hours when someone’s trying to work out how to make the numbers stretch another week.

But we know that practical support is only part of the equation. There’s also the human side of the job – the long hours, the mental load, the isolation that can creep in.

That’s why we partner with organisations like Healthy Heads in Trucks & Sheds, to make sure mental health support is not only available but easy to access. That’s also why we work with tech partners on fatigue-monitoring systems that help drivers and operators stay safe without extra burden.

In short: we’re not trying to rebuild freight from the ground up. We’re trying to improve the parts that haven’t kept pace with the people doing the work.

And it’s not about removing brokers or undercutting traditional relationships. Those relationships matter. They’ve built trust, kept businesses afloat, and helped freight move across the country for decades.

What we’re saying is: let’s add to them.

Let’s build in more transparency, more tools, and more support – particularly for the small and mid-sized operators who often carry the heaviest load with the least backup.

We’re in it together

Because when those operators succeed, the entire system benefits. Freight moves more efficiently. Fleets operate with more flexibility.

Roads are better utilised, emissions drop, and service levels go up. That’s not just good for individual businesses – it’s good for everyone who depends on reliable freight, which is… well, pretty much the whole country.

We’re not under any illusions. The road ahead is complex. The industry is facing increasing compliance demands, pressure to decarbonise, rising insurance and maintenance costs, and a generational workforce shift. These are big challenges, and there’s no quick fix. But one thing is certain: any real solution must include the carriers who keep the system running.

That’s why Ofload is focused on being a useful voice in the conversation – not the loudest one, and certainly not the only one. We’re building for the long haul, by staying close to the people who’ve been in it all along.

This industry is tough. It always has been. But it’s full of people who know how to make things work – rain, hail or border closure. If we can support them with the right tools, the right partnerships, and the right level of respect, then we’re not just building smarter freight. We’re building fairer freight.

And that’s a future worth showing up for.
