The Highway Advocates story

Highway Advocates was started with a straightforward mission: to give truck drivers and transport operators the legal support they need to deal with the complicated and often overwhelming world of road transport law.

Too often, we saw good people in this industry – people doing tough work in demanding conditions – fall foul of technical legalities, procedural traps, and overly aggressive enforcement. It didn’t sit right with us.

Our focus has always been 100 per cent on the heavy vehicle industry. We know the road, the regs, and the reality of life behind the wheel. And that’s why we’ve become a trusted ally for drivers and operators across the country – standing up for their rights, protecting their livelihoods, and helping them move forward with confidence.

How it all began

Before all this, Robert was a truckie himself. He lived the long hours, the deadlines, the constant pressure, and the deep pride in getting the job done. But he also saw how vulnerable we were – especially when something went wrong, even if it wasn’t our fault. There was no one in the legal world who truly understood what we were up against out on the road.

That’s when Robert decided to change direction. He enrolled in law school with a clear vision: to build a legal practice for truckies, by a truckie. He didn’t just want to be a solicitor. He wanted to build a firm that gave the industry the kind of legal support it deserved.

Highway Advocates was launched at the 2021 Brisbane Truck Show. It felt right – standing among the very community we set out to help.

Fast forward to today, and that dream has grown into a powerful reality. With Principal Solicitor Rodney Boyd now leading our legal team, Highway Advocates has become known for combining genuine road knowledge with serious legal firepower.

What we do

At Highway Advocates, we provide legal support across a wide range of issues that affect truckies and transport operators. Whether you’re an employed driver, an owner-driver, or a fleet operator, we’ve got your back. Our work includes:

Appearing in courts in all jurisdictions

Challenging traffic, fatigue and load-related fines

Responding to NHVR and police enforcement actions

Advising on licensing and demerit point risks

Navigating compliance and safety obligations across state and federal law

What sets us apart is how we speak to our clients. We cut through the legalese and explain everything in plain English. We’re not here to impress you with Latin, we’re here to help you understand your position, your options, and how to get the best outcome.

Our advice is practical, grounded, and shaped by a genuine understanding of life on the road.

Rolling with the changes

The heavy vehicle industry is in a constant state of change. New regulations, tighter compliance regimes, and shifting enforcement priorities keep everyone on their toes –  especially drivers, who are expected to stay up to speed or pay the price.

At Highway Advocates, we make it our business to stay ahead of the curve. That’s how we’ve managed to help more than 2000 clients since we opened the doors. We’ve developed an approach that’s sharp, fast-moving, and focused on results.

Our non-conviction rate speaks for itself. In many cases, we’ve delivered outcomes that other firms wouldn’t have thought possible. That’s because we combine deep legal knowledge with insider experience – and it shows.

Being based in Goulburn, NSW, just down the road from Marulan, puts us right at the crossroads of major heavy vehicle enforcement activity. We’ve got our finger on the pulse and boots on the ground.

Whether it’s appearing in court in person or remotely, we’ve worked across every jurisdiction in the country. That experience helps us understand the procedural quirks and legislative differences that exist between states and territories – and we know how to use that knowledge to our advantage.

The original and the best

Since our humble beginnings in May 2021, Highway Advocates has grown to become one of the busiest firms of its kind in Australia. That’s no accident. It’s the result of determination, hard work, and staying laser-focused on our mission.

As we head into our fourth anniversary at the 2025 Brisbane Truck Show, it’s clear that others have taken notice. We’ve seen law firms pop up trying to mimic our model. But there’s one problem with copying us – we’re not just a model. We’re the original.

There’s only one Highway Advocates.

We were founded by an ex-truckie, and everything we do is rooted in that real-world experience. We’re not just lawyers who’ve studied transport law – we’ve lived it, and we continue to breathe it every day. Now, with Rodney Boyd at the legal helm, that same spirit continues to drive everything we do.

What’s next

As we look to the future, our mission remains unchanged: to provide accessible, affordable, and effective legal support for the heavy vehicle industry.

But let’s be honest –  with a new Head of the NHVR about to be installed, who knows what lies ahead? One thing we can say for sure: the enforcement barrage isn’t letting up anytime soon. If anything, it’s getting more intense.

That’s why we’re expanding. We’re building stronger relationships with the transport industry, broadening our services, and doubling down on education and advocacy. We want drivers and operators to know their rights, avoid the traps, and feel confident that someone is on their side.

Knowledge is power. And we’re here to share it.

Wrapping it up

Highway Advocates has always stood for real-world experience, legal skill, and genuine support. We understand the pressure, the risks, and the pride that comes with working in the transport industry.

We’ve built something special – a law firm that’s truly by the industry, for the industry. And we’re just getting started.

We’re with you – every kilometre of the way.
