Melbourne lowers speed limit in a bid to stop crashes at notorious bridge

It has its own website and social media page highlighting the countless crashes and companies behind them – and 26 height warnings on approach to deter errant drivers from taking the Montague Street bridge on.

But nothing seems to get the message across.

Now the state government is trying a lower speed in the hope Melbourne drivers will finally stop crashing into the notorious three metre high overpass for route 109 trams.

A media release from Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan announced this week that it will soon reduce the speed limit from 60km/h to 40km/h between a 350-metre stretch from Munro Street and Buckhurst Street, “to improve safety by reducing the likelihood and severity of crashes”.

“The reduced speed will provide drivers with more time to consider their vehicle height as they approach the Montague Street bridge, giving them additional time to stop.”

Crews will be on site installing the speed signage in late May, with the new speed limit of 40 km/h to become legally enforceable once signs are installed and uncovered.

“We know that reducing speeds also reduces the likelihood and severity of crashes, which is why we’ve made this important change to the speed on this stretch of Montague Street,” said state Minister for Roads and Road Safety, Melissa Horne

“Road safety is a shared responsibility – drivers should always check the height of their vehicle before travelling and obey road safety and warning signage.”
