Upgrades including shoulder and road sealing, curve widening, new line marking and safety barrier installation have been completed on the Mallee Highway between Tailem Bend and Geranium.
Around 1200 vehicles travel on this stretch of highway each day, including around 300 heavy vehicles.
Between 2019 and 2024, there were 11 crashes on this section of the Mallee Highway resulting in 13 injuries.
SA’s Department for Infrastructure and Transport says these upgrades will improve travel and freight efficiency and help to prevent the risk of serious and fatal crashes.
In coming months, Audio Tactile Line Marking – also known as rumble strips – will also be installed to reduce run-off-road crashes.
These works form part of a $168 million investment in South Australia under the national Road Safety Program, jointly funded by the Australian and South Australian governments (50:50), and forms part of the South Australian Road Safety Action Plan 2024-2026.
