Macquarie Pass closed for slope stability investigations

The Illawarra Highway will remain closed at Macquarie Pass between Tourist and Tongarra Mine roads following the severe weather that has battered NSW this week.

Transport for NSW (TfNSW) said more than 250mm of rain has fallen at Macquarie Pass during the past three days, meaning the road will need to remain closed beyond the planned 4am reopening today to allow investigations to be carried out to ensure the stability of the slopes.

All traffic will continue to be detoured via Hume Highway, Picton and Mount Ousley roads, adding about 30 minutes to journey times, said TfNSW.

TfNSW expects the road to remain closed for at least 48 hours and said it will continue to keep the community informed as investigations continue.
