B-double defected for ‘operating under extreme non-compliance conditions’

The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) has defected a B-double after it was intercepted in northern New South Wales recently.

The regulator said the vehicle combination was “operating under extreme non-compliance conditions.”

“The heavy vehicle was travelling on the Pacific Highway when Safety and Compliance Officers (SCOs) performed the intercept and detected several safety issues with the vehicle,” said an NHVR spokesperson.

Among the major issues identified by SCOs were the complete failure of the airbag suspension system, with the airbags dislodged from their saddle mounting points.

To add, “Several brake boosters had exceeded their travel limits and the pushrod stroke indicators fully exposed. With the warning lights illuminated, this showed that the driver had failed to address brake-related faults,” the NHVR revealed.

The NHVR says it is continuing enquiries into the matter. “Due to the ongoing investigation, the NHVR is currently unable to comment further on the matter.

This disregard for safety by the operator not only jeopardised their own life but also posed a significant risk to other road users.”

The NHVR also issued a reminder, “If you’re being pressured by your employer to drive an unroadworthy truck, please call our Heavy Vehicle Confidential Reporting Line (HVCRL) on 1800 931 785.”
