Upcoming Tassie highway closures impacting heavy vehicles

To make way for TasWater sewer network works, there will be a number of closures in place impacting B-doubles and vehicles over 4.3 metres in height.

TasWater will be installing the next section of a new 4.3 km sewer pipeline across the Domain Highway and into Queens Walk, Hobart. This work will involve sections of both roads being closed at different times between Wednesday October 1 and Friday October 10, 2025.

TasWater has advised that during this period, works on Domain Highway between the Tasman Bridge and the Brooker Highway will involve some full and single-lane closures from October 3-6. Travel from Glenorchy into the city via Domain Highway will not be possible – access will only be available to traffic from the city or Eastern Shore.

Dates are subject to weather and ground conditions, with final road works and sealing occurring soon after.

To help minimise delays for heavy vehicle operators, TasWater has provided the following information:

For B-doubles

B-doubles travelling northbound on the Brooker Highway must use the following alternative route:

  • Travel via the Tasman Highway and Davey Street to Evans Street
  • Turn left onto Evans Street
  • Turn right onto Macquarie Street
  • Turn left onto the Brooker Highway and proceed northbound through the Railway Roundabout

(*Note: Use of Liverpool Street (a Hobart City Council road) is not approved due to lane width and stacking distance constraints at the Railway Roundabout.)

B-doubles travelling southbound must use the following alternate route:

  • Via the Brooker Highway and Macquarie Street, then onto the Tasman Highway.

(*Note: Do not use Liverpool Street past the pool for southbound movements.)

Vehicles over 4.3m in height

High vehicles travelling westbound from Cambridge face clearance restrictions:

  • Cannot use the Tasman Bridge westbound if Domain Road is closed, due to limited clearance under the Domain Highway flyover (near Government House).
  • Cannot turn onto the East Derwent Highway, due to vertical clearance restrictions on the Tasman Highway overpass at the East Derwent slip lane.

Alternate route:

  • Vehicles should be diverted via Richmond Road.
  • To avoid backtracking through Rosny Hill Road or Clarence Council’s network, diversion is recommended at either the Acton Road junction or the Airport junction.
  • From there, follow the Richmond Road – Colebrook Road – Tea Tree Road route back to the Midland Highway, providing access north or south via the Brooker Highway.

High vehicles travelling eastbound on the Tasman Highway must:

  • Approach the Tasman Bridge using the right-hand lane to ensure safe clearance under the Domain Highway flyover.
