A new instructional video has been released to help drivers safely descend the South Eastern Freeway in Adelaide.
Launched at the South Australian Road Transport Association (SARTA) Conference in Adelaide at the weekend, the tips feature Collins Adelaide’s driver trainer Ricky Vatsinaris and were developed in consultation between NTI and SARTA and with input from the National Truck Accident Research Centre.
“SARTA thanks them for the considerable amount of time and effort they put into developing what we believe is a more valuable video for HV drivers, in their industry language, about the key features of the SE Freeway descent and things for HV drivers to watch out for and manage,” said SARTA Executive Officer Steve Shearer.
SARTA President Sharon Middleton said the video above was an important additional tool for an industry that prioritises safety above all else.
“The heavy vehicle and road transport sector wants to ensure everyone completes their trips safely, from our truck drivers, to all other road users,” Middleton said.
“We welcome every additional tool that helps drivers share their skills and experience with each other.”
Shearer said the informative video is useful for HV drivers, especially those about to make their first descent down from Crafers to Adelaide, as well as for those who may have done it before.
He said the video highlights several key points that all HV drivers descending the hill should be aware of:
5. Caution should be exercised at the lights turning right onto Portrush Road as that turn is noticeably off-camber, so take it slowly.

where did the 3rd safety ramp go at the top of the hill??? though it was dangerous to use as it was parallel with the road, and he is no safety officer and wouldn’t want to be taught by him, he doesn’t say if year you feel anything is wrong with your vehicle eg: brake issues or engine issues ie: Jakes brakes are intermittent or not working, to use the much safer old rd down the hill to rest your vehicle and make sure you come down the hill safely, keeping yourself and others alive and unharmed, sometimes the old rd is better to use than the ski ramp to hell, some instructor he should include this it has kept me and others safer and alive in the past, but we are the so called old school that know the differences to keep us and others safer.
Best you educate the NHVR. They have been pulling drivers up because they are going too slow. I am not kidding. They have been telling drivers in older trucks that they are holding other trucks up and must go quicker. Maybe educate them that older trucks are not equipped with desent retarders?
If the NHVR can’t get it right, what chance does a driver have that can’t tell the difference?
Good video, but education should be coming from those that should know better.
all good and well but maybe traffic managment need to be educated also on the reasons why trucks go slow down that hill… recent works had their workers telling truck drivers to hurry up
