Ritchie Bros., in partnership with CYP Design & Construction Joint Venture, will manage the final dispersal of surplus assets and materials from the landmark Metro Tunnel Project in its Metro Tunnel Surplus Auction.
The one-off sale, to be held on Wednesday October 29, 2025 via Ritchie Bros.’ IronPlanet platform, will include over 500 lots of construction materials, worksite ancillaries, and light equipment direct from one of Australia’s largest transport infrastructure builds.
As the Metro Tunnel prepares for opening in December 2025, this auction is part of the last phases of a construction effort that will transform Melbourne’s rail network.
Items to be sold include scaffolding, formwork, concrete pumping gear, industrial wiring, forklifts, utes, portable site offices, and other worksite facilities gathered from project compounds across the city.
Errol Salih, Senior Sourcing Logistics Manager for the Metro Tunnel Project, said the sale forms part of a coordinated sustainability program as the project winds down.
“Across a project of this scale, surplus stock naturally accumulates — from vehicles and small plant to general site materials.
“Rather than scrapping or storing these items, we’re working with Ritchie Bros. to ensure they’re repurposed and reused. It’s about sustainability— keeping materials in circulation rather than landfill.
“With final landscaping and finishing works underway, this auction marks the last step before handover and opening.”

Cody Irvine, Regional Sales Manager Australia South at Ritchie Bros., added that buyers will have a rare opportunity to acquire equipment from one of Australia’s most significant infrastructure projects.
“The Metro Tunnel has been a landmark achievement for Victoria, and this sale offers access to well-maintained, project-used equipment at every scale,” he said.
“We expect strong interest across the construction, civil, and electrical sectors, both locally and internationally. With IronPlanet, bidders can inspect assets online or in person, and take part in the auction from anywhere in the world.”
Inspections will be open on Monday October 27 and Tuesday October 28 at CYP Flower Market, West Melbourne, ahead of the auction start at 9:00 am AEST on Wednesday October 29.
Successful buyers will collect assets between October 30 and November 21, 2025, weekdays 8am to 4pm.
PPE – including work boots, long pants, long sleeves, and a hard hat – is required during onsite collection.
A buyer’s fee of 8.5 percent applies to all purchases. Assets not collected by the deadline will be transferred to Ritchie Bros. Geelong at the buyer’s expense.
“It’s been a privilege to work alongside CYP JV on such an iconic project,” Irvine added.
“This auction is part of closing the construction chapter and showcases how major projects can finish sustainably.”
