Trapped truck passenger dies in Lithgow bridge collapse

A Sydney Trains staff member has been tragically killed when the truck he was a passenger in collided with a rail bridge in Lithgow, NSW, earlier today.

At about 8.50am today, emergency services were called to Inch Street following reports that a “cherry picker’” had hit a bridge, causing it to collapse.

The driver – a 38-year-old man – managed to free himself from the cabin, but a passenger was trapped inside.

Emergency services – including NSW Ambulance paramedics, Fire and Rescue NSW and NSW Rural Fire Service – worked for hours to free the 34-year-old man, but he died at the scene.

Chifley Police District Acting Commander John Walke said the passenger was “stuck for a considerable amount of time” and it was a “dangerous scene” for emergency services to approach.

“Our immediate focus is on supporting everyone affected by this tragedy – especially the family and loved ones of the worker who has died, and all their colleagues, as well as Transport for NSW staff involved in the incident,” said a statement from Transport for NSW Secretary Josh Murray.

“I extend my sincere thanks to the emergency services and Transport for NSW personnel who responded swiftly to this tragic incident and who continue to manage the scene with professionalism and care.

“This incident has deeply shaken the entire rail workforce and the broader transport community.”

SafeWork NSW are attending the scene, and will investigate the incident.

Anyone with dashcam footage or information are also urged to contact Lithgow Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

A report will be prepared for the coroner.
