Family-run Ross Transport is proud to be leading the massive i98FM Illawarra Convoy down the mountain this Sunday after securing the coveted lead spot with a $305,000 bid in today’s live auction.
It’s the third time out in front for the Port Kembla-based operation which has taken part in all of the convoys since the inception in 2005.
“The i98fm Illawarra Convoy holds a special place in our hearts — and it always will,” the company wrote in a Facebook post announcing the news.
“As of today we have raised nearly $1.5 million since the inception of Convoy in 2005!
“Every dollar raised represents hope, support, and love for families doing it tough. Seeing the smiles, hearing the stories, and feeling the spirit of this community reminds us exactly why we do what we do.”
Ross Transport credited its Christmas in July Convoy Gala Ball, Battles of the Businesses, Trek for Amarli and the Ross Transport Open Day for helping it win the top slot.
But also said the achievement wouldn’t have been possible without the unbelievable support of sponsors, community, family, and staff who have donated, volunteered, sold raffle tickets, attended events, and shown up time and time again for such an important cause.
“A very special thank you to our extended family – the Amarli Army and Grechys Boxing and Fitness – for going above and beyond with your fundraising efforts. Your passion and drive truly inspire us all,” the company added.
Organisers, i98FM said competitive bidding also saw huge contributions from long-time supporters, with MJ Rowles contributing $145,000 and Murrell’s Freight Lines donating $108,985 to the final auction total.
Coles Illawarra raised a massive $156,000 to be the Lead Bike bidder for the fifth consecutive year.
“In a beautiful example of true Convoy spirit, Coles opted to yield the first position to Kris Beretov from Throttle Jockies, who is currently battling his own cancer journey.
“Kris, in turn, graciously passed the Lead Bike position to Lee Tanks and his family, son of Convoy legend Ann Tanks, who sadly passed away this year.”
The spectacular i98FM Illawarra Convoy will depart under police escort this Sunday at 8.15am from GM3 Appin.
As per previous years, the Convoy route will travel down Mt Ousley, through Warrawong, past Stockland Shellharbour, and conclude at the free Family Fun Day located at Shellharbour Airport.
Registered motorbikes are scheduled to arrive at the airport at approximately 9.15am and lead trucks are expected to follow, arriving around 10am.
The Family Fun Day is packed with entertainment, including performances from headliner act The Screaming Jets. AC/DC support act, Large Mirage will also join the festivities along with an array of Illawarra talent.
There is plenty of other entertainment on the day including Kye’s FMX Jam motocross show, plus rides, Santa photos, food and market stalls, plus a special ‘Cars for Convoy’ display. i98FM (98.1) will be broadcasting live from 6am.
“What started out years ago as a few trucks joining together for a great cause has grown into something so much bigger – a true community movement. From trucks to bikes, to families, businesses, and schools – the entire Illawarra has come together with one goal: to make a difference for kids and families who need it most,” added Ross Transport.
Meanwhile, Transport for NSW has advised that speed reductions will be in place at various times on sections of Appin Road, M1 Princes Motorway and Princes Highway during this weekend’s big event.
The Princes Highway will be closed between Helensburgh and Maddens Plains while trucks prepare for the start of the event.
The right-hand turn from Mount Ousley Road onto the M1 Motorway northbound will also be closed between 7am and 12pm and vehicles should use University Way to access the motorway northbound.
The convoy will travel in one lane along Appin Road, Old Princes Highway, M1 Princes Motorway, Masters Road, Five Islands Road, King Street, Windang Road, Shellharbour Road, Lake Entrance Road, New Lake Entrance Road and Princes Highway.
