Feedback is now open to industry on the draft amendment to the Heavy Vehicle (Mass, Dimension and Loading) National Regulation.
The National Transport Commission (NTC) said the consultation provides an opportunity for stakeholders to review the technical drafting and ensure the amendments are accurate, clear and practical to implement, and that there are no unintended consequences.
The changes to the MDL Regulation are to increase General Mass Limits (GML) to the limits that currently apply under Concessional Mass Limits (CML), expand Euro 6 concessions to road trains, increase the length limit for vehicles from 19 metres to 20 metres, and amend the tow mass ratio and associated conditions for tag trailers.
To assist industry in providing feedback, the NTC has developed a consultation overview, which can be read alongside the draft MDL Regulation Amendment and the accompanying explanatory document which outlines the proposed changes.
To have your say, the NTC is inviting consultation by uploading a submission here, and/or via an online information session on Monday, December 13 from 3.30-4.30pm (AEDT). Click here to register.
The webinar will be recorded and uploaded here shortly afterwards, for anyone unable to attend.
Consultation closes on Monday, January 19.
In August 2025, Australian transport ministers approved the draft Heavy Vehicle National Law Amendment Bill (HVNL) and Heavy Vehicle National Amendment Regulations.
It has since passed the Queensland Parliament, as the host jurisdiction for the law, and is expected to commence in mid-2026.
