Plans progress for $80 million Western Sydney rest area for truckies

Tenders are now being called to help design the eagerly anticipated truckies’ rest area between Erskine Park and Eastern Creek in Western Sydney.

The proposed site near the intersection of Archbold and Old Wallgrove roads is strategically positioned close to logistics hubs, including Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport, Erskine Park, and Marsden Park along the M7 corridor.

Currently there are limited rest areas for truck drivers between Pheasants Nest to the south of Sydney and Wyong to the north – a distance of 180km and nearly two hours driving.

The state and federal governments have committed $40 million each into the project, and when finished, it’s expected to be big enough to accommodate 100 trucks and trailers.

“It was an election promise and it is going to be delivered,” said former truckie, WA Senator Glenn Sterle whose voice helped sway the final location choice.

“This facility will provide up to 100 truck drivers a safe haven to pull over and manage their fatigue.”

Pre-qualified design consultants are now invited through to December 15, 2025, to submit their interest in wanting to undertake work to produce a concept design. Tender information can be found here.

The winning tender will then draw up the concept design taking into account the feedback TfNSW received through consultation.

That consultation sought the views of more than 800 drivers on what they needed to better support their rest breaks in Western Sydney.

Safety, security and driver comfort will be central to the concept design, said TfNSW. This includes well-lit areas for security, CCTV surveillance, and consideration for the specific needs of women drivers.

“The rest area should include flushing toilets, clean drinking water, hot showers, shaded areas, ample parking with secluded bays for sleeping, and space for potential food options.”
